Chiaroscuro is a new computer generated composition I created in the summer and fall of 2023. The term “chiaroscuro” is used in visual arts to describe a technique in which subject matter is defined by the dramatic use of light and shadow. I have taken up this perspective to the many dualities at play in music - high and low pitch - long and short durations - sound and silence. Chiaroscuro was premiered at the Center for New Music in San Francisco on October 7, 2023. Two Wings for Soprano, Tenor Saxophone and Computer and A Winter Partita for Flute for Flute were also performed on the same concert

Touch for Piano was premiered by Dmitri Vorobiev on July 1, 2023 at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts Watson Recital Hall. Touch explores the expressive possibilities a pianist brings to music through their ability to musically shade and shape phrasing, and bring out tone and color through the attack and release of the keys on the keyboard (i.e., their “touch”).

In 2022, I created The Book of Changes, a new work for vibraphone and computer. The Book of Changes is inspired by the I-Ching and was premiered by Patti Rudd at the New York Electronic Music Festival on June 22, 2023. The music walks through a sound world exploring ideas and fragments derived from the eight I-Ching trigrams determined by the throw of three coins. Central to the work are two free improvisations by the vibraphonist. Each improvisation is based on, as a point of departure, a pair of melodic I-Ching trigrams chosen at random by the computer. The computer joins the vibraphonist in their improvisation, in effect creating a musical I-Ching reading.
